Other Writing

I write books and short stories, but I also write some humor stuff (at least I hope it's humorous) or occasionally an article about something interesting in the news or personal to my life. I think a good writer can write about anything or on any issue, and I like to keep learning and growing as a writer. If you like my work and want to hire me to write something (or invite me to submit something to your literary whatever), hit the contact button on the bottom of the page and we'll talk.

Meanwhile, here's a sample of my "other writing." Click the title or picture to read the article.

What my husband thinks he looks like when he's driving our new car.

Where we explore my husband's love for an inanimate object. My husband liked our car so much when we bought it that I, the least jealous wife in the whole world, was feeling neglected. So, of course, I wrote something mocking his obsession with an automobile.

Where I learn that Uma Thurman and I have something in common. I wish it were tall, willowy beauty, acting talent, and Ethan Hawke as an ex-husband, but it's that we're both confused by our washing machines.

The woman I identify as when I do the wash

Haven't they ever seen Jurassic Park?  Or any of the other six Jurassic Movies?

I wrote this during the Elizabeth Holmes trial. There was a trend on social media of women cheering Holmes as a feminist groundbreaker because she had behaved as badly as some male high-tech CEOs. People were fascinated by Elizabeth Holmes. I was fascinated that people were so fascinated.

A little while back, our government was proposing that every bank transaction over $600 would be monitored. I found that humorous, so I wrote some humor. And no worries, the proposed rule didn't pass. Instead, we're all going to get our own IRS agent. Good times. lol. Don't audit me, bro.

My dad died in May 2020 from Covid in a New York State nursing home. That, and the time leading up to his death, wasn't a great time. In fact, it was pretty horrendous. This is what I wrote to deal with it all. Writers write, right? So I wrote this. It's not a cute, funny piece like a few of the others. So there's your warning. I think it's kind of touching, though, in a cathartic, clearing-out-the-ghosts way.

Speaking of ghosts, this story is a hundred percent true. A lot of people smile at me and say "uh..huh" when I tell this story, but it's true. I swear. I posted this on Reddit to hopefully get some people to go buy my book. (Like this ghost story? I also wrote a ghost story novel! You should check it out! Here's the URL.) People loved it. Everybody and their brother who had a true-life ghost story podcast or blog wanted to use it. (Well, maybe not everybody, but a lot.) I remember one guy didn't even ask; he just put it on his program on YouTube and informed me afterward. (Not cool!) I even did one podcast personally, but that got delayed or something, and I had my suspicions that it might never air until it finally aired. But here it is, my true-life ghost story, being disseminated out into the weirdness of the world one more time...

My husband and I are cat people. We've had great cats, at least two at a time. We had three when we had Annie, but cats don't live forever (regretfully), so now we have two. (6/2024 - back to three!) Annie was a great cat and my husband's favorite, although please don't tell our other cats that because they all think they're Larry's favorite. He plies them with cat treats and knows exactly where and how they like to be petted. When it was time, I wrote this piece for Annie. But of course, it was really for Larry.

This is a piece on the Rittenhouse trial and I think it shows my ability to do a serious piece on a current event. I tried to clear away what was speculation-treated-as-fact at the time. It was a super-interesting trial based on an event that happened during an amazingly polarizing political cycle. Living outside of D.C., we're a political news household and always up on issues and what's happening in the news. If you're not into that kind of stuff, check out my short stories instead!

I was originally going to call this "When Did Censorship become Part of the Scientific Method?" My dad had died of Covid, and the truth of what had happened with the whole pandemic was hard to find. Then, people were getting thrown off social media and everybody was in an uproar over misinformation. Weird times, huh? When I finished the piece, this title seemed more appropriate.

This is my Grandma. She's where the Burrows comes from. She was something else. Five foot two, and every day she wore a dress and heels - even if she was washing the floor - and she always had a cigarette in her hand and pot of coffee brewing. I'm pretty sure her middle name was Matriarch. (Actually, it was Katherine, but you get what I'm trying to say. She ran the whole show, and I'm pretty sure she's responsible for her three granddaughters being so freaking bossy.) I was thinking about her one day, and I wrote this little schmaltzy piece, but people are allowed to be overly sentimental about their grandmas. The dog's name was Ted. I know this because Grandma labeled every single picture, down to the animals. Grandma was probably swearing a blue streak at someone right before this picture was taken and Ted is expressing his shock at Grandma's salty language.
